Women's 2008 Update

The women's basketball team is 11-5 overall and 1-4 in the MAAC. Over the break, Fairfield won the Fordham Holiday Classic with wins over Troy and Mount Saint Mary's (MD). Senior guard Sabra Wrice was named Tournament MVP, while junior forward Baendu Lowenthal was named to the All-Tournament First Team. Here's what they had to say afterwards:

Sabra Wrice:

Both games were close at the half, but Fairfield pulled away in the
second half both times. What was different?

We always come out in the second half like its a new game. I think
the difference in the second half of both games was our attitude. When
things get close we have the type of team that pulls together. When we
are all focused and on the same page great things happen.

With 2 tournament MVP's, do you try to step your game up in bigger
games?

When you hate losing every game is a big game. Every time our team
takes the floor I know we are out there to win. Everyone on this team
has roles to fulfill and my job is to score. So when I play I just try
to do what I am supposed to.

Baendu Lowenthal:

You've been carrying a lot more of the scoring load this year than
last. Has that been more of the game plan or more of your development
as a player?

Yes I have been scoring a lot more this year. I attribute that to my
skill development in the summer time. I worked hard on my jump shot as
well as my post up game.

How much does it help to have someone like Steph Geehan also grabbing a
bunch of rebounds while scoring in the post as well?

It is wonderful to have Geehan, another post player there to grab
rebounds. It takes a lot of pressure off of me in the post.

With conference games ahead, with Marist up next, is Fairfield playing
at a level ready to contend for a top seed in the MAAC?

We have to continue to work hard because there is always room for
improvement and we know other MAAC teams are working hard to be top
contenders as well.

Fairfield then dropped to 0-3 in the MAAC with losses to Marist and Canisius before earning their first conference win against Niagara. The Stags are currently seventh in the MAAC; however, two of their losses are to league leading Marist.

It looks as if Marist will again win the championship. If Fairfield can come in second during the regular season, they will have an excellent shot at earning at WNIT bid. However, that is getting ahead of everything. First let's see if they can string a few conference wins together.

The women return to the court this Friday at 7 at Alumni Hall against Rider 5-11 (0-5).
